Best Records and EPs of the Year 2021... so far

It's official. We have reached July, meaning half of 2021 is gone. Something that looks, feels and sounds surreal. Same applies to holidays and being fully vaccinated, forthcoming situations that seemed a distant dream not that long ago. So, in order to keep with the optimistic vibes, we are set to recover a Blog tradition that covid took us away last year (we weren't in the mood). Today we unveil our 25 best records and EPs of the year so far! The list is alphabetical and length is not an issue (proper ranks are reserved for December). It took us a little while (it has been a really thoughtful decision) but, as promised, here's the second of our "best of the year so far" lists, with our 40 favourite songs halfway through 2019! Primavera Sound 2019 in brief, day 2

Back to regular life after Primavera Sound Festival (PS) 2019 ended! So, while we adjust to our day-to-day schedules, here comes the second of our quick recaps of what we just experienced at Parc del Fòrum, today focusing in Friday's 31st. Let's go!

The Good
Lucy Dacus: The hour in which her gig was programmed was criminal. The Ray-Ban stage was, in principle, too big. But these unflattering factors became irrelevant the moment Ms Dacus started singing. What an arresting record 'Historian' is (if 'Night Shift' doesn't touch, you don't have blood in your veins). What a mesmerizing talent the Virginian is.

Kurt Vile: In an edition where the guitar seems to be a prehistoric, outdated instrument (of course, IS NOT), the proposal from the Philadelphian musician and his backing band was kind of challenge against the new "definition of cool". A guy who doesn't care about poses, looks or flashy movements. Just about indulging you into his hypnotic guitar-driven, slightly psychedelic, hazy folk-rock. He just killed it at the Pull & Bear stage.

The Bad

Snail Mail: The most disappointing gig from our entire PS took place on Friday afternoon. We love 'Lush''s immediacy, electricity and straightforward indiepop charms... But we couldn't hear any of these wonders at the Primavera stage. First technical issues, then serious vocal problems, with abundant squawks and misses from Lindsey Jordan (was she ok?). We demand a quick return to the city to compensate the disillusion. (Please!)

The Queen
Birkins & Ken: What can you expect from a covers gig? If you have our dear Birkins alongside great company, you'll have one the highlights of the whole festival. Their rendition of 'Ziggy Stardust', David Bowie's masterful record was exhilarating, unadulterated fun. Initially fuelled by Cris' powerful vocals... and then completely stolen by Ken Stringfellow's electrifying performance, pure punk-rock. This man doesn't get enough credit, when we owe him so much. First as half of the mighty The Posies. Secondly, being part of the immortal Big Star. Later on, touring and playing with R.E.M. (not enough adjectives to explain what that means for this Blog) And now, storming the not so Hidden Stage. Unforgettable. Put some Ken in you life!

Suedeheads, again: Didn't know what to expect from the veteran Brits before their show... but what we found was the most rejuvenating, enjoyable gig of PS19 for this Blog. Suede delivered a surprising greatest hits show, with Brett Anderson going relentlessly in search of the connection with the audience, who responded accordingly. It couldn't be any other way when the band is throwing you hit after hit in, such as 'We Are the Pigs', 'So Young', 'Metal Mickey', 'Filmstar' (beat that four killing combo!), 'The Drowners' or 'Animal Nitrate', among many others, with such passion and fiery energy. The attitude, the frontman, the tunes... Oh! They still have it. Intact.

Primavera Sound 2019: my draft schedule

As the tradition obliges, here comes one of our favourite Blog posts! Because the Primavera Sound Festival timetables' were disclosed yesterday, so the time of making our own 'path' trough the line-up has already arrived. At first sight, it doesn't look as promising as previous editions (at least for us, but that's something we knew already, sign of the times and "new normalities") but we know that one of the charms of this festival is to discover new bands... just seems that in this 2019 more than ever!

Pretty complete and straightforward day... that could have been wonderful without the clashes, a couple of them being simply terrible: Mr. Malkmus overlaps with half of Big Thief's gig, and Interpol with Guided by Voices. So, though questions to be resolved ahead. Mac DeMarco before Courtney? Mr. Pollard or a band that has returned with a very solid record after a couple of letdowns? Or even considering watching Pylon Reenacment society (also clashing with the aforementioned two)?)

If Jarvis doesn't save it (any of you has an idea of what kind of performance will offer to us?) this is a frustrating day. Almost nothing to be excited for until Built to Spill, which overlaps (hope just slightly) with our dear Me and the Bees. There, more emptiness (Drab Majesty?) until the Jarvis' enigma and waiting for Stereolab's time (one of the few must-see of this PS19 for us) with Primal Scream.

Sunday, June 2nd,

And more frustration to end the Festival. Two big, mandatory acts for us (Peter Buck & Corin Tucker? They should be headliners... ALWAYS), separated by many hours and locations, damn it what a terrible schedule!

Best Records of the Year 2018

After our favorite EPs, now is time to move to their "big brothers". So, without any further delay, it's our pleasure to unveil our Best Records of 2018! Our 30 "mandatory" albums, many of them part of our personal soundtrack of the year, others recent discoveries that couldn't be highlighted enough. Never easy, but always a delightful task to do, we are particularly happy with our humble list for this year, as it somewhat balances consecrated artists, Blog favourites, plus our trademark bunch of emerging bands. In short, a fair summary of 2018 in music (the one that matters to us, at least) and for sure, a pretty stunning and varied collection of music proposals. Primavera Sound 2019: first impressions

We're back! Fresh from our break... and surprised with the announcement, almost out of the blue (at least for us, but we are guessing the amount and caliber of certain headliners by certain Festivals within the country might have had something to do) of the Primavera Sound's line-up 2019. So let's dive in...

Labelled as the #NewNormal and heralded as the perfect encounter between the 'state of music', parity and the trademark eclecticism of the Festival, there's a bit to be annoyed for. First, why now? Getting involved in the parity debate looks kind of  'too little, too late'. But hey, better late than never. You are welcome. The worst part, if you ask us, is that there's a feeling of a worrying marketing product created (that video doesn't help) as an excuse to justify a roster that, at first glimpse, lacks some substance and exciting names, replaced by extremely lame (being very polite) and mainstream trends that (product placement alert, product placement alert) behind cool (music genre?) terms such as Urban are eager to sell sneakers, hats, glasses or tracksuits.   

But at the same time, and despite some huge misses that we thought almost granted, like Robert Forster (new album and European tour in Spring), The Chills (one of the records of 2018) and Sharon Van Etten (although I'm very scared of the new album judging by first tunes), there's quite a lot to be excited for, in particular the amazing return of Stereolab, the unexpected gig of Filthy Friends (Primavera, if you are having Peter Buck & Corin Tucker in Barcelona why don't you ask them for more, in any of their multiple incarnations) and the chance of seeing live some of the artists responsible for the best LPs of 2018, like Lucy Dacus or Soccer Mommy.

As always, this is just the Blog's first impression. We are happy it seems this Primavera's edition recovers the traditional vast offer in what regards to the 'middle and small class', so we are certain we are about to 'discover' several proposals to add to 'our' Festival routes. So, all in all, let's honour the Blog’s tradition: here’s our rough paint & colour' version of 2019 line-up with the bands we are willing to see. Suggestions are welcomed and as always, a lot to listen ahead!!

The Bloodbuzzed Jukebox Week 121 (Primavera Club Special)

Today we have a special Jukebox for you, a miscellaneous playlist devoted to the Primavera Club Festival that, starting today, will take us all weekend discovering new groups live! Discoverer 145: new indie findings

Back with another trio of new proposals in our discoverer series. And again, and it's becoming a very nice tradition, conformed by three amazing female musicians, the best example women rule the indiepop world right now. Always girls to the front!

Mitski. Born in Japan, 25 year-old musician Mitski Miyawaki has moved with her family very frequently around the world, living in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Malaysia, China and Turkey among other countries before getting settled in New York to study composition at SUNY Purchase. After digital, self-released albums 'Lush' and 'Retired from Sad, New Career in Business' in 2012 and 2013, in 2014 arrived her first proper debut record with ' Bury Me at Make Out Creek' out via Double Double Whammy and Dead Oceans. Now she's back with 'Puberty 2', recorded with the help of her accomplice Patrick Hyland, out since June by Dead Oceans, an album fated to transform Mitski in one of the alternative artists to follow closely. Inventive and sonically rich, risky, brave, tense and meaningful, like summoning the Pixies and St.Vincent's altogether. Among the frontrunners for best album of the year... A must.

Japanese Breakfast. And we end with a very personal story between Eugene, Oregon, and Philadelphia, PA, to meet Michelle Zauner. Singer and guitarist of Philly indie rock quartet Little Big League, in late 2014 she moved back home to the Oregon after her mother was diagnosed with cancer. While she was there, she revamped songs from her previous lo-fi releases (there's a pretty bunch of music you can check at her bandcamp from 2013-2014) under the name Japanese Breakfast in collaboration with musician Ned Eisenberg. The result is 'Psychopomp', a stunning album out now via Yellow K Records, where the mourn of the loss collides with a bursting celebration of love and life enveloped in a collection of arresting tunes, ranging from bright indiepop to hazy shoegaze. Music as the guide for the souls to the afterlife and the comfort of the ones who remain here.

Lucy Dacus. Hailing from Richmond, Virginia, Lucy Dacus is a ridiculously talented musician for such a young age (just started to count her twenties!). She dropped out film school at Virginia Commonwealth University, worked at a photography lab before deciding to focus solely on music, with first tunes appearing online in 2015 and igniting the buzz on the blogosphere. Debut album 'No Burden', recorded in Nashville in just a couple of days, appeared on February 2016 via EggHunt Records (now reissued by Matador who just signed her to overwhelming response, thanks to her powerful, distinct voice, her witty (and funny, darkly funny) lyrics and her knack for melodies, between rock and folk.
