Discoverer 152: new indie findings

Here we are! Ready to get mesmerized with this year new music findings in our discoverer series, but while they start coming, let's make a quick stop to talk about three mind blowing acts found at the dusk of 2016. Cause it's never to late for great music!

Omni. We begin in Atlanta, Georgia, with this trio formed by guitarist Frankie Boyles (previously in Deerhunter and Balkans) and ex-Carnivores Philip Frobos on vocals/bass and Billy Mitchell on drums. After grabbing our attention with first tunes 'Afterlife', 'Wire' and 'Wednesday Wedding', past summer they delivered debut album 'Deluxe' via Trouble in Mind. Summoning Pylon and Wire's angular, powerful and oddly hypnotic postpunk, this was one the best records of the year (that I discovered too late to add to the list). Now they are back with the 7" 'Fever Bass/Thesis' single, out late February via Chunklet, and we are ready to get ourselves inmersed in the cascading, propulsive guitar riffs and ringing beats. Not to miss.

Ryley Walker. Quick move to Chicago, Illinois, to meet Mr. Walker, a young folk from Rockford who moved to windy city in 2007, joining the local noise scene with bands like Heatdeath and Wyoming before shifting slowly to his current folkie style. In 2011, being just 21, Riley's first releases appeared in the form of tapes 'Evidence of Things Unseen' and 'Of Deathly Premonitions', the latest alongside Daniel Bachman. A fingerpicking promise was born. After a bike accident in 2012 that forced Ryley to quit his day job, he became a full time musician, something evident with 2013 recordings 'In the West Wind' EP and 'All Kinds of You' LP, echoing Nick Drake. But Ryley was still adjusting to his own sound, which blossomed a couple of years later with LP 'Primrose Green', out through Dead Oceans, where he combined the talents of a full backing band with pastoral and psychedelic sounds, and his latest offer to date (if we exclude the collaborative efforts with Bill MacKay and Charles Rumback), 'Golden Sings that Have Been Sung'. Fated for greatness...

Gurr. Berliners Laura Lee Jenkins and Andreya Casablanca met in university and bonded over literature, music, movies and hanging out. Becoming a band seemed the natural next step and, around 2012 first tunes surfaced their bandcamp (please check the funny song descriptions) with a very limited cassette with these songs and many more released in late 2014 and a split EP with Burnt Palms on the same year. Official debut EP 'Furry Dream' arrived in April 2015 via Duchess Box Records. But we weren't prepared for their hyper-addictive first album 'In My Head', out in October 2016. Echoing bands of the 90s like the Breeders or Belly as well as beloved contemporary acts like Honeyblood or Chastity Belt this is stunning, carefree and overpowered collection of garagepop gems.

Did you think we have forgotten our weekly dose of new music? No way! So, here's its the second round of our TOP TEN Jukebox, with some of the songs we are enjoying the most in this beginning of the year (do not miss the stunning comebacks of Julien Baker or Diet Cig). Discoverer 145: new indie findings

Back with another trio of new proposals in our discoverer series. And again, and it's becoming a very nice tradition, conformed by three amazing female musicians, the best example women rule the indiepop world right now. Always girls to the front!

Mitski. Born in Japan, 25 year-old musician Mitski Miyawaki has moved with her family very frequently around the world, living in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Malaysia, China and Turkey among other countries before getting settled in New York to study composition at SUNY Purchase. After digital, self-released albums 'Lush' and 'Retired from Sad, New Career in Business' in 2012 and 2013, in 2014 arrived her first proper debut record with ' Bury Me at Make Out Creek' out via Double Double Whammy and Dead Oceans. Now she's back with 'Puberty 2', recorded with the help of her accomplice Patrick Hyland, out since June by Dead Oceans, an album fated to transform Mitski in one of the alternative artists to follow closely. Inventive and sonically rich, risky, brave, tense and meaningful, like summoning the Pixies and St.Vincent's altogether. Among the frontrunners for best album of the year... A must.

Japanese Breakfast. And we end with a very personal story between Eugene, Oregon, and Philadelphia, PA, to meet Michelle Zauner. Singer and guitarist of Philly indie rock quartet Little Big League, in late 2014 she moved back home to the Oregon after her mother was diagnosed with cancer. While she was there, she revamped songs from her previous lo-fi releases (there's a pretty bunch of music you can check at her bandcamp from 2013-2014) under the name Japanese Breakfast in collaboration with musician Ned Eisenberg. The result is 'Psychopomp', a stunning album out now via Yellow K Records, where the mourn of the loss collides with a bursting celebration of love and life enveloped in a collection of arresting tunes, ranging from bright indiepop to hazy shoegaze. Music as the guide for the souls to the afterlife and the comfort of the ones who remain here.

Lucy Dacus. Hailing from Richmond, Virginia, Lucy Dacus is a ridiculously talented musician for such a young age (just started to count her twenties!). She dropped out film school at Virginia Commonwealth University, worked at a photography lab before deciding to focus solely on music, with first tunes appearing online in 2015 and igniting the buzz on the blogosphere. Debut album 'No Burden', recorded in Nashville in just a couple of days, appeared on February 2016 via EggHunt Records (now reissued by Matador who just signed her to overwhelming response, thanks to her powerful, distinct voice, her witty (and funny, darkly funny) lyrics and her knack for melodies, between rock and folk. Sharon Van Etten, Angel Olsen, Courtney Barnett... take her on tour with you!  

Discoverer 105: new indie findings

Another Primavera Club special, now in our Discoverer Series. Three very different bands just discovered this weekend!!

The Coathangers. Punk style for starters. Coming from Atlanta, Georgia, the band formed in 2006 as a fun excuse to hang out but, after playing just a house show, they were asked to open for The Hiss as the result of their powerful performance. Since then, constant touring, several EPs, singles and four full lengths: 'The Coathangers' (2007), 'Scramble' (2009), 'Larceny & Old Lace' (2011) and latest 'Suck My Shirt', released this March on Suicide Squeeze Records 2014. Although the group has now been reduced to a trio, there are no signs of exhaustion, as a matter of fact, it's clearly the opposite. Minnie, Crook Kid and Rusty are adding new resources to its trademark palette between no-wave and garage, without losing any sense of their spontaneity and vivacity. Dissonant, wild and fun ride.

Strand of Oaks. Timothy Showalter hails from Goshen, Indiana, though he is based in Philadelphia, after a very troubled personal story. After putting out a couple of first releases in 2006 and 2008, debut album 'Leave Ruin' appeared in 2009 on La Société Expéditionnaire. The folky, singer-songwriter territory was quickly overtook with self-released LP 'Pope Killdragon' a year later, where synthesizers and effects pedals offered a much wider range in Showalter's music. Tours followed, with another album, 'Dark Shores', coming in between via Ten Atoms Records in 2012. Finally, after a near-death experience in Christmas Day of 2013, this survivor recorded 'Heal' out this year on Dead Oceans. Confessional indie-folk turned into stormy rock and performed with a brutal honesty. Don't miss him live if you can, what a beast!

Horsebeach. This Mancunian four piece started out their short career to date as the solo bedroom project of Ryan Kennedy, but soon evolved into a full band. Self-titled EP appeared in November 2013, with track 'Even' being saluted by the UK media as the first step of a band to follow closely. The buzz made the limited edition 7" single 'Faded Eyes', out on Alone Together Recordings in February an immediate sold out. Something that anticipated the general praise their s/t album, out since July, is receiving. Melancholic, chiming jangle pop, with Real Estate, Wild Nothing but also 80s indie-pop dreamier bands as references. Oh! The knack for penning perennial melodies and the ability to stop time with a four minute tune. Horsebeach have both talents in their DNA, so don't miss them.

Discoverer 63: new indie findings

Back to our regular band proposals after the Primavera Sound 2013. New bands for your ears only!

Bleached. Let me introduce you to the Clavin sisters, Jennifer & Jessie. Hailing from L.A., the band came out from the ashes of the defunct punk combo Mika Miko. After a short break, where Jennifer moved to New York while Jessica played with the Cold Showers, sisters gathered again in L.A. in 2011, beginning to play shows and issuing their first singles, "Francis", and "Carter". "Searching Through the Past" followed that December, preceding their debut album, "Ride Your Heart", out since February on Dead Oceans Records. 77' punk meeting California sun, noisy melodic rock with some edge and rawness but without losing the "pop touch". Seriously addictive.

Free Time. Formed in summer of 2012, this quartet is the creation of Melbourne musician Dion Nania, former leader of Panel of Judges. After moving to N.Y. in 2011, he played on Scott and Charlene’s Wedding and the Twerps. But soon started to write his own songs, putting a new band together. Mixed-finished between Australia and the States during 2012, Free Time's eponymous debut is out now digitally, with its physical release coming this June on Underwater Peoples Records. Timeless indiepop tunes, sometimes upbeat & jangly, others slightly psychedelic, revealing a storyteller mind and a talent for finding an enduring melody.

Big Summer. Based in Barcelona but being a fully international group, I had doubts whether they fitted on the Spanish section or here. The project began in 2008 when singer-guitarist Vasco Batista got together with drummer Simon Mille, but it wasn't until late 2011, when bassist Shorn Keld joined them, that things got serious. The delicious "Morning Sun" came out in 2012, creating some "blogosphere" buzz. Wise wizards from El Genio Equivocado signed the group (now a quartet after recruiting Robert), publishing the tune as a single past February, followed by "Bone and Arrow" EP in April. Five brilliant pills devoted to the 90's, echoing Real Estate and Yuck, showing the great promise of the combo.
