Primavera Sound 2018 in brief, day 2

No time to waste. Here's the second round of our traditional briefings of what went on for us within the Primavera Sound Festival 2018. Friday 1st of June came with several "big names" and a few promises to be confirmed so let's begin!

The Good
A great female afternoon: The combo of Waxahatchee-The Breeders is just a fantastic way of beginning a Friday afternoon. The band of Katie Crutchfield, which includes her amazing sister Allison (what a wonder when their two voices intertwine) and the great Katie Harkin (Sleater-Kinney, Sky Larkin), gave us a top-notch show, passionate and powerful. We love 'Out of the Storm' and believe the future couldn't be brighter for them. The day kept getting better and somewhat linked, because after Waxahatchee it was the turn of the Deal sisters, who are so genuinely fun and lovely you really don't care about the initial false steps or little bloopers. Their gig, like the weather, got warmer and warmer, ending in a memorable, gigantic, way. A big big love for both bands.

That band from Ohio: Luckily, we've seen The National in many different occasions and much better, smaller venues now, so we didn't bother about getting in a front row (if you want to be in a closer position for a gig in Mordor, you must sacrifice the previous or next one) position. From the distance, it's pretty obvious the gig wasn't going to be that special for us, but still the band was impeccable and unafraid of getting into their latest and more experimental 'Sleep Well Beast', or deliver a setlist generous in ballads and downtempos. In our opinion, highlights were a rougher 'The System Only Sleeps In Total Darkness', 'Fake Empire' and finale 'About Today', all stunners, as well as newbie 'Rylan' sounding promising. They never disappoint.

The Bad
Too much Mordor: After several editions without ending there that much, this PS18 we have spent too much time within Seat and Mango stages, the clearest symptom this year's line-up wasn't that appealing for us. Mordor is hell. No way to hide from the sun, too many bored people being there because the headliner "obliges" (meaning endless chat) and too many bar zones (meaning more human traffic of bored people). Add the issues of leaving the area, which is something that the organization has to improve. There's a Festival in Mordor and another one, much more pleasant, out of it.
Charlotte Gainsbourg: You know when you go somewhere because you have a reminiscence (not confirmed) that once you enjoyed it? It also works with records & artists. And usually, it's a mistake. That was the case.

The Queen
Father John Misty: It was in 2012 and Mr. Tillman opened the day (Saturday) at Auditori, very early in the afternoon. The venue wasn't full by no means, and he was doing a show on his own, acoustic guitar and dark sense of humour. How times have changed! On Friday he was accompanied by a full band and an orchestra, clearly one of the headliners of Friday line-up. And deservedly so. The show was arresting, flawless and enjoyable from start to finish. A performer at the top of his game, doing wonders with a song book that at Seat stage sounded like a collection of classics. Folks, the man has it. Probably the gig of the Festival. Must-see in a smaller venue as soon as we can.

The Bloodbuzzed Jukebox Week 180

Even for those who were reluctant to support it or just believe it (some Spanish journalists and politicians which doesn't deserve to be quoted), the ones who criticizes it or the ones eager to take despicable profit of its historic success (blue or orange, the shit is the same), the highlight of the week (month, year, decade...) has been the feminist strike of past Thursday. Here's hoping it's only the first step o a real, global, unstoppable movement. And to continue with the good mood of the demonstration and the positive force of change, here comes our latest TOP TEN Jukebox. A variety of tunes from consecrated artists like Father John Misty to bands we have discovered recently but we can't (won't) get out of our heads, such as Whenyoung or Megrim. Ten stunning songs to keep the excitement going! And remember, all tunes are available at our Soundcloud. (Join Us!)

Primavera Sound 2018: first impressions

History repeating folks. We have the feeling we could almost copy & paste what we wrote on 2017's Primavera Sound line-up and use it for this year's edition. Just unveiled after what it looks like a filtration/accident, reaching a new low for the Festival in what regards to its announcement. But anyway, that's not what matters at all. Let's focus on the line-up, then.

We know that #PrimaveraUnchained has already being labelled as a terrific one. And don't get us wrong, is pretty impressive and heavy on "big names". But, at least for us, this is kind of another letdown (at first glance, the great thing about PS is what you discover before and at the Festival)
Because the feeling of deja vu is even worse than last year. I mean it's great to have The National, Nick Cave, Father John Misty, even the Monkeys... but that was expected, not surprising at all. And that's where things begin to get slightly dissapointing. The amount of recent 'repeaters' is really considerable, while the first-time band, our discoveries, the 'middle-small' names, usually the key factor that makes PS stand out from the rest, is lacking (we repeat, at first take) looking like we are fated for spending too much time in Mordor this Spring. Where 's Flying Nun and my beloved antipodean bands? No Bats (again)? Fazerdaze? The Courtneys? Where's Courtney Barnett & Kurt Vile? Beaches? Also, no Filthy FriendsEyelids? Weather Station? AlvvaysI could go on forever...

Of course, this is just the Blog's first impression... We are sure we will 'discover' several proposals to add to 'our' Festival routes (Alex Lahey looking good at first listen!). So, honouring the Blog’s tradition, here’s our rough (we don't have the timetables yet) 'paint & colour' version of the line-up with our first impressions on the bands we are willing to see. Too much yellow indeed, right? Sure it will change (suggestions are welcomed)... As always, a lot to listen ahead!!

Discoverer 151: new indie findings

Inexplicably (and indefensibly), America chose the 'orange monster' instead of a highly qualified woman, not as progressive as one would like (by no means), but compared with the Republican abomination, a wonder. To start compensating the outrageous mistake, in our discoverer series we propose three mind blowing female artists that really deserve your loyal adhesion!A trio fated for the best of the year lists!

Springtime Carnivore. Born in Oak Brook, Illinois, but based in Los Angeles, California, to me Greta Morgan was immediately associated with the great Katy Goodman, as she is La Sera's guitar player and her music partner in that promising (but forgotten?, 'Space Love' was a delight) duo Books of Love and, more recently, the excellent punk-rock-meets-60's-pop covers album 'Take It, It's Yours', out this August. But that's just the tip of the "music iceberg", 'cause Ms. Morgan is a talented multi-instrumentalist with a heart melting voice that began her career when she was a teenager, first as a member of the Chicago-based groups the Hush Sound, with whom she released three LPs between 2004 and 2008 (plus a later EP and a reunion tour last year), then with Gold Motel, releasing two albums between between 2009 and 2012 (loving them at the moment). Afterwards, Morgan moved to L.A. California and, while she joined forces with Goodman, launched her solo project under the intriguing "seasonal predator" moniker. Springtime Carnivore's eponymous debut appeared in November 2014 via Autumn Tone Records, with follow-up 'Midnight Room', just came out past month. Instantly melodic but moody & evocative, this nocturnal dreampop with hazy textures, yet at the same time an incredible warm feel, should be part of your lifetime soundtrack to face the moon (even a supermoon). Pop in orbit.

Julia Jacklin. Born in 1991 in the Blue Mountains, Australia, but now based in Sydney, Ms Jacklin took all the worst influences to make something wonderful, and completely of her own (needless to say, and most luckily, diametrically opposed musically). Inspired by Britney Spears, at the age of 10 she took classical singing lessons. Later on, she joined a high school covers band, which made versions of Avril Lavigne and Evanescence (sic). She performed locally, forming the band Salta alongside Liz Hughes in 2012. But after moving to Sydney for her university studies, her career rocketed this year due to the phenomenal reception of first two singles 'Pool Party' and 'Coming of Age', embarking herself in a world tour (still no dates confirmed in Spain, damn it) and several Festivals, playing in support of artists such as Whitney or Okkervil River. Now her debut album 'Don't Let the Kids Win' out since October 2016 on Transgressive Records / Polyvinyl, confirms all the promise. Indie-folk-rock recalling the mind-blowing Angel Olsen, the also recently discovered Nadia Reid, but with some of the witty humour of Father John Misty, Jacklin's debut is astonishing. Confident, bright, clever, powerful, charismatic. A MUST of this 2016.

Hazel English. And another Australian talent to finish our discoveries series today, although 25-year-old Hazel is now based in Oakland, CA. Taking the blogosphere under her spell since the first tunes (demos) surfaced the net last year, the Sydneyan musician has been carefully preparing her official debut while touring the west coast (Europe anytime soon?). A first release that now appears in the form of 12" EP 'Never Going Home', out since October (sold-out at the moment of writing this lines) via  House Anxiety / Marathon Artists, and it's an indiepop gem. Cinematic, lush, adventurous, wistful, breezy, this small collection of stunning, sun-soaked dreampop pieces are easily among the strongest EPs of the year, certifying here's a musician to follow closely.

These Go to 11: interviewing Phosphene

Last interview before holidays! And what a great one! Because our guests answering the questionnaire this time are Phospheneone of our favourite music discoveries on this 2016 so far and, besides an exciting band, are a trio of wonderful people. These Go to 11!

Rachel, Matt and Kevin, seeking for the light among the haze
Phosphene
Haling from Oakland, CA, they started to play in 2008 when Rachel Frankel (vocals / guitar) and Matt Hemmerich (drums) met in class. Two years later the couple decided to start a music project together, launching a first EP that by now must be a rising collectors' item. But Phosphene needed a major factor to become what they are now (an ace band, that is): meeting Kevin Kaw (bassist/ guitarist) in a songwriting event featuring Aaron Dessner's from The National (a shared passion with this Blogger) in 2013. With Phosphene becoming a trio, they recorded s/t first LP in July 2014 followed by the terrific EP 'Breaker' this April (among the best of 2016 so far). A stunning blend of dreampop, indie-rock and shoegaze fated for great things to come. Here we go!

The millennial heartbreakers
1.First record that you bought (be honest)
Matt: 'Dookie' by Green Day.
Kevin: 'Fountains Of Wayne' (s/t album).
Rachel: 'Millennium' by Backstreet Boys.

2. First and last concert you have attended (be honest too!)
Matt: AFI in 2003, most recent: Low with Andy Shauf.
Rachel: Hanson in 1999 with my mom (SUPER COOL), most recent: Low with Andy Shauf.
Kevin: my sister took me to see Duran Duran in 1993, most recent: Treasure Island Music Festival.

3. Guilty pleasure (song/band you shouldn’t like but you do, yes, it’s the embarrassing question)
Rachel: 'Transantlanticism' by Death Cab for Cutie (not all that embarrassing, but it’s a super sappy album and they’re a very mushy indie rock band).
Matt: 'If You're Reading This It's Too Late' by Drake.
Kevin: 'Me&The Rhythm' by Selena Gomez.

4. Most precious music item you own (collector mode on)
Matt: 20” Paiste Dimensions ride cymbal.
Kevin: my Torino Red 2000 American Standard Stratocaster.
Rachel: my greatgrandmother’s violin.
The "fucked up" song. The National during the durational performance of
'A Lot of Sorrow' by Icelandic artist Ragnar Kjartansson. Photo: Charles Roussel
5. Favorite lyrics (not yours)
Matt: "You are my center when I spin away" Radiohead, “Videotape”; "I'm a moth who just wants to share your light" Radiohead, “All I Need”; "I live in a city sorrow built. It's in my honey, it's in my milk" The National, “Sorrow”; "I still owe money to the money to the money I owe" The National, “Bloodbuzz Ohio”.
Rachel: “I’m a modern girl, but I fold in half so easily” Rilo Kiley, “Pictures of Success”; “Bored in a role, but he can't stop standing up to sit back down, and lose the one thing found. Spinning the world like a toy top 'till there's a ghost in every town.” Elliott Smith, “Can’t Make A Sound”; “There’s always a siren singing you to shipwreck” Radiohead, “There There”.
Kevin:No longer cradled in gravity’s memory...” Pale Saints, “A Thousand Stars Burst Open”, “Over the moon and under the influence” The Trash Can Sinatras, “Easy Read”.

Neko Case, a true original
6. Musician/s you would like to meet (should be alive, for obvious reasons, but you can choose a dead one too)
Matt: Neko Case, Thom Yorke, Carrie Brownstein, Killer Mike, ElP.
Rachel: Neko Case, Elliott Smith, Alan Sparhawk, PJ Harvey, Rachel Goswell.
Kevin: Kurt Feldman, Jen Goma, Koji Nakamura, Robert Smith, Johan Duncanson, Jeremy Wrenn.

7. Favorite artwork album (not yours)
Matt: 'Unknown Pleasures' by Joy Division.
Rachel: 'July Flame' by Laura Veirs, 'The Eraser' by Thom Yorke.
Kevin: 'Kid Games' by Airiel, 'I Love You, Honeybear' by Father John Misty.

'We got you, babe'... repeat ad eternum...
8. Books or movies? Depending on your answer recommend us one (trick: you can choose both)
Matt: Movies because I’m illiterate. 'Carol' is one of the most evocative films I’ve seen in some time.
Rachel: books- 'Kafka On The Shore' by Haruki Murakami, 'All My Puny Sorrows' by Miriam Toews
Kevin: books- 'The Adventures of Kavalier and Clay' by Michael Chabon, 'Man V. Nature' by Diane Cook; movies- 'Groundhog Day'.

9. Song (of yours) you are most proud of
Matt: It’s a tie between 'Rogue' and 'Wire'. Both are dear for selfish reasons. 'Rogue' was the first song I ever wrote and sung a vocal melody on. 'Wire' is the first song I wrote in full on guitar.
Rachel: I’ll pick one from our first album and one from our second. I was really happy with the way the melody turned out on 'Thief' and 'Be Mine' is probably my favorite child from Breaker.
Kevin: I’m quite fond of 'Wild Decay'.

10. What does it mean indie for you? (yes, the “serious question”)
Matt: Indie is more of an ethos to me than a genre. There’s a huge community of musicians, bands that encompass it, so you can really stick “indie” in front of any sound. Being indie, however, doesn’t inform the music itself.
Rachel: I still don’t really know the answer here. At its core the term just represents “independent” music, but like Matt said it’s evolved into an entire scene. It’s actually pretty meaningless for me at this point.
Kevin: I think it involves making something for the sake of making it, and then sharing it with others, all on your own terms.

11. Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
Matt: residing in Portland, Oregon with Rachel. A black cat and corgi are mandatory in this house. Ideally, we’ll still be creating music with Kevin as Phosphene labels.
Rachel: I’d love to keep playing music and gain a stronger following over time. I also hope to be living in the Pacific Northwest and continuing my work as a designer and illustrator, probably with lots of animal babies and a HUGE kitchen.
Kevin: I don’t know, but wherever I end up, I’m sure it’ll involve donuts.

Zillion thanks Matt, Kevin and Rachel!

Once again we are here to bring you our TOP TEN Jukebox, full of tunes that we have liked most lately. This time we have mixed playlist, with a consecrated artist, Father John Misty, new exciting bands like VLIVM (from our beloved Discos de Kirlian) or Jawbreaker Reunion, and rising acts like Flowers.
