The Bloodbuzzed Jukebox Week 249

After some intense days of work, decisions, anxiety and changes, we have landed on this long weekend with a spectacular TOP TEN JUKEBOX. It was more or less ready past week, but with so much hustle and bustle, we haven't been able to publish it before (add some technical problems to the mix, bye bye Soundcloud), but better late than never. These ten songs, a royal flush with several essential groups for this humble blog such as Jetstream Pony, The Persian Leaps, Basia Bulat or Eyelids, deserve to be listened carefully. Yep, today is Thursday, but here we are, ready to unveil our TOP TEN Jukebox already! Why, you ask? What's the reason for this change of day? Well, we have an extremely exciting weekend ahead that includes...attending The National gig in Lisbon! Discoverer 44: new indie findings

The New Tigers. Thanks to the excellent blog The Jangle Box I have another reason to love Finland: this quartet from the ever-pretty city of Turku. Active since late 2008 (seems the origin of the band was a wedding), they released a debut EP in 2010. After many gigs and some studio recordings, their first, self-titled album arrived on September 2011. And now a split single with the Swedish band Top Sound, covering their song "I Have Been Replaced". Using the fuzz as an envelope in which they hide the brightest melodies, or mix the immediacy of lush pop with sparse moments or sonic blasts, the Tigers are shoegazer magicians.

  
The Pear Traps. Among the best bands reaching my inbox lately there's this Chicago group, formed after a Craiglist ad in early 2009. After a self-titled EP in 2011, here comes "The Elsewhere" EP, four haunting tunes that immediately recalls Real Estate's masterpiece album "Days". Laid-back indie-pop/rock where guitars sound shimmery and adventurous, where the storm can be as warm as the sun, and where lo-fi aesthetics moves forward from its "comfort zone", announcing the promise of something very big. A name to follow close.   

Pure Bathing Culture. Let's go to Portland, OR, to meet Daniel Hindman and Sarah Versprille. The duo began writing songs together in 2009. After two years, they moved to "Portlandia", and officially started their music project, quickly getting the attention of multi-instrumentalist/producer Richard Swift. With his help, they released their self-titled debut EP this spring, and what a debut it is! Pure retro-pop gold! Sorry for the excess of exclamation marks, but it's hard to contain my enthusiasm! Can you imagine Beach House leaving the "darkness"? Or Tennis looking to the 80s? Sophisticated, lush, charming. Awww, the joy of great pop music.  

Discoverer 42: new indie findings

New recommended bands for your listening pleasure, enjoy!

Fear of Men. Most immediate, biggest "crush" of the last months. This very young quartet, split between London and Brighton, released a couple of demo tapes, "Hanna Schygulla" in March 2011 and "Alice Munro" in November, and the debut 7" "Ritual Confession", in August 2011. Their dreamy and cinematic indiepop, with the killer voice of Jessica Weiss on top, placing them alongside our much beloved Let's Buy Happiness, has achieved a new realm of greatness this 2012 with their second 7", "Green Sea", and the forthcoming "Mosaic / Your Side". Can't wait for more! Check them out!

Cape Canaveral. Rejoice fans of charming indiepop! EardrumsPop is here again to save our longing ears!. Their new free EP introduces us to this Danish band, formed in the summer of 2010, and with a ridiculous talent to nail the perfect melody, as gorgeous "Crazy Love" and "Moles" prove. Folk-pop gems with an upbeat and joyful vibe, plus a WONDERFUL (big capital letters) cover of Galaxie 500's "Oblivious". Satisfaction granted. Let's begin the campaign to make EardrumsPop win a Nobel Prize for their contribution to the well-being of (good-tasted) mankind!
Single - Crazy Love, Moles, Oblivious
South of France. Back to Los Angeles with the project of Jeff Cormack (initially it was his solo idea, then a duo, a trio and finally the pair again) and Kelly Lueke. Active since 2010, their first release came in late 2011 with the EP "Kings", garnering buzz and nice reviews from the blogosphere. And now the time has arrived for "Another Boring Sunrise", their debut album, out now, in which their trademark retro guitar pop, in the vein of bands like Cults, Dominant Legs or Tennis, is  catchy and warm enough to keep you singing and smiling for weeks.

Discoverer 29: new indie findings

New indie proposals for you!

Lower Dens. Just when I heard "Brains", first song of their second album, "Nootropics", out this spring, the Primavera Sound announced them among the line-up. Baltimore based, this is the band of Jana Hunter, a great folk artist (and guitarist), that worked with Devendra Banhart and Andy Cabic (Vetiver). After a hiatus, Hunter returned to "music" in 2009, releasing "Twin-Hand Movement", Lower Dens' debut LP, in 2010. And what a record this is. Atmospheric, epic yet introspective, misterious, colorful, dreamy, instrumental yet compelling when Hunter's soaring voice appears, tense but placid at the same time. Like a guitar-driven's "Teen Dream", ethereal, but a bit closer to you after each spin.

Summer Twins. Chelsea and Justine Brown are twin sisters in their (ridiculously early) twenties, that decided to form a band (they are four live) in 2008, inspired by 50s and 60s rock records. After an initial self-released EP, "The Good Things" in 2010, now they have just presented their first album, "Summer Twins", on Burger Records. A sun-baked collection of wonderfully catchy (check "I Don't Care" and tell me you don't like it) dreampop tunes. Think of Tennis with a little hint of retro garage rock, or Best Coast with a focus on vocal harmonies. Great expectations.
Lost Lander. Although a new band, behind Lost Lander there's the mastermind of Matt Sheehy, from the really recommendable group Ramona Falls. Besides, the just released debut album, "DRRT", has been produced by Brent Knopf, Ramona Falls frontman and former member of Menomena. The combination of both forces makes this album very special. Indie folk-pop are the barebones of the songs, embellished and propelled to something lush and atmospheric, with a mesmerizing production. The result is hypnotic, with many contenders for the best songs-of- the-year lists inside. 

Music to look forward to in 2012

Now that holidays are officially over, it's time to look ahead into 2012. This is a small summary of the music releases/events I'm looking forward to for this year. A brief shortlist of the gifts I ordered for the Three Kings Day. 

1. The year is starting with a very special, highly anticipated album. Of course I'm referring to "I'm Across, I'm Ashore", our beloved Nat Johnson and the Figureheads arrive in few weeks! Don't you think the artwork is lovely! Counting down the days!
2. There's one release I'm really excited after hearing its first available tune,"Serpents" (click on the title to hear/download). Sharon Van Etten will release "Tramp", her third album, in February, with stunning collaborations like the Dessner brothers' from The National or Matt Barrick from The Walkmen. Great expectations with this.
3. "Young and Old" Tennis sophomore album, also for February.
4. The Shins are finally back!. James Mercer has "Port of Morrow" scheduled for March. Yes!! What about coming to Barcelona (Primavera Sound maybe)?
5. Two sure-fire for spring-summer: Beach House and The Walkmen.
6. My second Primavera Sound Festival, of course
7. The long-play debut that confirms the greatness of this young band: Let's buy Happiness.
8. Phoenix, Basia Bulat and Cat Power should be releasing new works this year.
9. Indie-pop heavens: Baffin Island, The Hi-Life Companion, The Hermit Crabs, The School will be back ... and Camera Obscura?
10. And finally, 2012 has to be, finally, the year of Beth Orton's comeback. Please, please, please.

Sure, there are many more out there. Will The National complete a new album before the year ends (the couple of songs premiered a few weeks ago sound great, so there's hope) And U2? And a personal favourite,  The Mynabirds? 2012 is going to be an excellent year for music.
