The Bloodbuzzed Jukebox Week 165

Yep, today is Thursday, but here we are, ready to unveil our TOP TEN Jukebox already! Why, you ask? What's the reason for this change of day? Well, we have an extremely exciting weekend ahead that includes...attending The National gig in Lisbon! But don't worry: we are going to leave you in great hands, thanks to the excellent company of our beloved Sufjan Stevens, the new, arresting single of Line & Circle (one of our favourite 'newcomers', for sure), the comeback of Tennis and terrific discoveries like Patsy's Rats. These Go to 11: interviewing Discos de Kirlian

For our next interview, we move again from musicians to a label owner. This time to introduce you to the man behind (and I mean it, he is a one-man label owner) the lovely Discos de Kirlian, which is a regular of our Spanish section. If you want to talk about indiepop in Spain... ask Òscar. These Go to 11!

Indiepop activist (band and gigs promoter, fanzine creator), Òscar Fernàndez decided that one of the few things he had left to do was creating and indie label. So that's what he did in the summer of 2011, paying tribute to the legendary Spanish band Aventuras de Kirlian (later Le Mans) with its name. Based in Barcelona, Discos de Kirlian (also books) is DIY ethics and aesthetics as its best. Minimal infrastructure and logistics, homemade, very handcrafty production and design, and Internet promotion. And of course, and incredible taste and care. The result? The bands he has/is worked/working with speak for itself: Armistice, Lavandera, Gente Joven, Puzzles y Dragones, Coach Station Reunion, Doble Pletina, Juli Bustamante... One of the best labels in our country.

I have read many more books. Any Enrique Vila-Matas's book is a good recommendation.

All, indeed, the past ones and the future ones (so many don´t stay) ... I believe that I go away to feeling proudly all.

10. What’s does it mean indie for you? (yes, the “serious question”)
Always say the same: indie for my it´s a raison d'être and living, not only in my music, all the moments of my life. To be your same and to travel out of all the established procedure or that want to impose us.

11. Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
I wait that not very removed of now, probably out of music promoter/label works but with a lot of way “indie life”.

After the books and concerts, is time to review 2013 in what regards to music releases. And we begin with the EPs  (no singles, 3 to 6 songs), a format that is giving me so many joyful moments it deserves a list of their own. Spanish Indie 17: suggesting the best national acts

Time for more of the best bands coming from Spain, enjoy!

Santa Rita. Formed in 2008, this all-female quartet hailing from Barcelona started their career by playing a lot live, including a slot at Primavera Sound Festival, or supporting Juliette Lewis. In early 2011, they released their debut S/T EP and, after a change in their line-up, in March 2013 came out "High On the Seas", first album on Aloud Music. Nine fire-powered pills of indie-rock, channeling the 90s spirit, fierce, passionate, cohesive and fuelled by rousing guitars and a tone of attitude. A lot of promise from a real band offering a heavyweight debut. 

Puzzles y Dragones. Discos de Kirlian again, they're on a pluperfect pop roll. Daniel de la Mancha (Autofans, Atrapado en el Tiempo, El Diablo Adolescente) gathered with three members of Alborotador Gomasio, and after seven months of devoted recording, here comes their debut 7" EP "Somos Puzzles y Dragones". Four tunes (five on its digital version), some reworks from Dani's previous bands and some new, this is a haunting little collection of indiepop gems in the vein of the best British pop from the 90s. Songs so good that seem to have been waiting for you for decades, ready to embrace and never let you go.
Wild Balbina. Coming from Vigo, the trio formed in 2010 when Antía Figueiras and Marta González decided to move on from their initial covers combo to a real band after recruiting V. Zapata. A lot of local exposure live followed until 2012, with their only release to date, the EP "Eat Tacos", out on Elefant Records. Self-defined as wild teen-punk-surf, the four tunes are a stunning blend of styles recalling bands like Bleached, Veronica Falls, Helen Love or The Shop Assistants. Besides their killer songs, the link with the riot grrrl movement is obvious, as they also run the feminist-cultural fanzine Typical Girls, offering another reason to keep this name on your agendas.
