Finally it's Friday! Because who says there is no one working at the office in August? Well, there's still some crazy people (like us) going around and getting up early (with the same expression as you at the subway, meaning why are we here and still working?). While we discount days for our desired holidays (not until September this year), we continue bringing you some music discoveries, because luckily for all of us, good music doesn't take holidays either. Build a wall to stop migration! Make a demonstration against a rapporteur (yet to be appointed)! Vote extreme right or/and millionaires (professional cheaters) to solve the (major, essential, pivotal) problems of inequality and distribution of wealth! Utter nonsense, bigotry and fascism, and we're afraid we, as citizens, have embraced this despicable era. The temptation to talk about politics is huge, but this weekend we're calling for a time out. Because we're about to take (momentary) shelter thanks to the Minifestival (Night Flowers, Free Cake for Every Creature and the mighty Kristin Hersh) tonight, plus we have prepared a terrific new TOP TEN JUKEBOX with several Blog beloved acts such as The Stroppies, the great Julia Jacklin covering The Strokes, I Was a King or one of the last gifts of the already missed Zach Denton alongside a bunch of exciting discoveries. It's been somewhat of a struggle finding the time to keep writing (life seems to be getting in their way more frequently) and maintaining a "sustainable" pace of updates at the Blog. We'll try, promise. But that doesn't mean we ain't listening to new, exciting music, ready to be gathered and packed in a flamboyant new TOP TEN JUKEBOX for your ears only. This week we have a pretty even combination of beloved names such as Martha Ffion, Shana Cleveland or She Sir, alongside most promising newcomers (with a double dose of "local product"). Plus a very special closing tune: the cover of Teenage Fanclub's 'Broken' made by fans as a way to say goodbye to founding member Gerard Love late last year. There's something on that ringing guitars by Mr. Buck himself and, of course, in Corin's throat that will always sound true and meaningful to this humble blogger, even more so in these "times of resistance". Discoverer 142: new indie findings

And being the Sunday after the riot grrrl day, we have decided to choose the trio of new proposals in our discoverer series accordingly, so enjoy, and don't forget: girls to the front!

Tacocat. The trip had to start in Seattle, Washington. This quartet was born in 2007 after Longview's Safeway co-workers Lelah Maupin & Eric Randall, drummer and guitarist of the band, discovered they had a music bound. Then Randall met bassist Bree McKenna while his band was practicing in the basement of the punk house she lived in, while Maupin met Emily Nokes in a graphic design class. First releases arrived in 2009 in the form of DIY tour tape 'Frenching and Foodstamps', a split 7" with Ghost Mice and their participation on the riot grrrl 12'' 'This is Happening Without Your Permission'. In 2010 came debut album 'Shame Spiral', plus another tour tape, 'OMG', followed a year later by EP 'Woman's Day', after which got signed by Hardly Art, releasing second EP 'Take Me to Your Dealer' in 2012. But the leap forward arrived in 2014 with sophomore LP 'NVM', hailed by critics and audiences along the States. And now 'Lost Time', Tacocat's third album, plus recording the theme song for the Powerpuff Girls reboot, are here. Joyous pop-punk with a knack for melodies and powerful chord-riven tunes, leaded by Nokes killer vocals, delivering humorous punches to the patriarchal society or just having fun riding into the absurd of this pop culture choking age. Brightest bite.

Personal Best. We move to Portsmouth, UK to meet this now quartet, that were originally a trio assembled around 2013 and featuring members of Caves, Attack! Vipers! and Bedford Falls. With first release arriving in March 2014 in the form of 'The Lovin' 12" EP out via Specialist Subject Records. Built from debut and recorded late that same year in mid-Wales, in March 2015 came album 'Arnos Vale', with the band touring since then. Power-pop with hints of punk, fueled by fuzz & urgency as much as melodies, recalling the 90s and beloved names as The Breeders, Sugar or The Posies. But what makes Personal Best memorable is the undeniable sense of honesty and joy this tunes bring to the listener. Do not miss them.

The Orielles. And we end in Halifax, UK with this unbelievably young trio (almost under age) formed in 2012 by sisters Esme and Sidonie Hand-Halford plus schoolmate Henry Carlyle Wade. Formerly named the Oreoh!s in 2013 they released debut EP 'Sunny Daze/Sleepless Nights', followed by 'Hindering Waves' EP a year later, first under their current moniker, after which they started to make some buzz thanks to securing supporting slots from bands such as Honeyblood, PINS, The Primitives and The Lovely Eggs, to name a few. After the cassingle 'Yawn' in Autumn 2014, in April 2015 arrived the self-released 7" ‘Space Doubt’. Now they are back with the new EP 'Jobin', out via Art Is Hard Records. Inventive, carefree surf-rock, full on sun-soaked melodies and instantly catchy melodies that hide a punch. Contagious teen spirit.

Discoverer 128: new indie findings

We go into darker and rawer sounds our discoverer series this weekend. Enjoy the three blasts you are about to hear!

Protomartyr. Hailing from Detroit, Michigan, this quartet formed in 2008 from the ashes of band Butt Babies, were three of its members performed for a while until they expanded into their current line-up and transformed into Protomartyr.  The group released debut album 'No Passion All Technique' in 2012 via Urinal Cake Records, which was followed by EP 'Colpi Proibiti' (also known as the 'Baseball Bat Ep' in the same year by X! Records. Tours and Festivals begun and they quickly put out sophomore record 'Under Color of Official Right'  released in 2014 via Hardly Art. The buzz was definetely on, something that 'The Agent Intellect', out since this October is propelling to such great heights. With a reason. Bleak  and tense post-punk with hints of punk, recalling heavyweights as Pere Ubu, Wire, The Fall or The Walkmen's roughest moments, with Joe Casey's laconic and straightforward vocals delivering bitter and emotionally draining lyrics, the menacing guitar lines of Greg Ahee, the pushing beat of Scott Davidson bass and the propulsive drums of Alex Leonard. Join the martyrdom...

Royal Headache. Cross the Ocean to land in Sydney to meet this punk rock & garage outfit and garage formed in 2008. With cassettes surfacing during their first three years of activity we can say their first offical release arrived in 2010 with self-titled 7"via R.I.P Society, that preceded eponymous album a year later. Another 7", 'Stand and Stare' released by Matador in 2013  anticipated what was about to come, a brilliant force of nature in the form of sophomore album 'High', out on What's Your Rupture? since this August. It's a very unusual, refreshing blend: the primeval nature and adrenalinitic urgency of punk packed with the emotional arrest, dare I say soul? intensity of Shogun's vocals, and the inmense hooks provided by a frenzied guitar line, an acoustic rendition or the surprisingly delicate couple of notes of a sparse organ. It's a moving record, one that gets you high and gets you places... Do not miss it.
Maff.  And we end our trip in Santiago de Chile (first band from Chile featured on the Blog, so happy!) to meet this promising quartet. Formed originally in 2012 by childhood friends and punk-rockers Ricardo (Richi) Gómez and Nicolás (Nek) Colombres they became a full combo with the addition of Martín Columbres and Gonzalo (Talo) Correa. Their only release to date is their self-titled, self-recorded and self-published mini-album, out since March 2015. Eight powerful and experimental tunes, connecting the haze and open spaces of shoegaze myths like Ride or Slowdive with a heavier, rockier side, one where Pixies or Sonic Youth easily come to mind. I know, big names... for a big debut. Keep an eye on them!

Discoverer 127: new indie findings

All-female discoverer series this weekend! Three very diverse takes on pop you have to hear!

Knife Pleats. My beloved Rose Melberg is back! The indie-pop legend (The Softies, Go Sailor, Tiger Trap) has a new and extremely exciting project, the latest from a pivotal artist after the recent Brave Irene and PUPS, aside of going solo. The leading part of a quartet that includes Kaity McWhinney and Tracey Vath from Love Cuts, plus drummer Gregor Phillips, Melberg formed the group because she had a new batch of songs that she felt really needed a full band treatment. What a wise choice! 'Hat Bark Beach', released by our friends at Jigsaw Records on late September is a killer. Fuzzed pop, joyful and alive with Rose's trademark vocals, her unmatched talent for melodies and vocal harmonies. What a comeback!

La Luz.  Close ride from British Columbia to Seattle, WA,, to meet this quartet formed in the summer of 2012 and leaded by Shana Cleveland, which was already featured in the Blog with her other project with The Sandcastles. Very quickly they came out with 'Damp Face', self-released debut EP that September. A year later arrived 'It's Alive' first LP  on Hardly Art Records. After and EP with Old Lacy Bed and the 7" 'Brainwash', since August we can enjoy their sophomore album 'Weirdo Shrine', produced by Ty Segall. Vintage surf-pop (it's hard not to think on Link Wray) but infused with an urgency and vibrant energy that is automatically contagious. Infinite guitars, celestial vocals in perfect harmony and vibes from distant, sunny places. Turn on the bright lights!

Martha Ffion. And we cross the Atlantic Ocean to meet the Irish, but based in Glasgow, artist Claire Martha Ffion McKay. She started to make her a name with irresistible debut EP 'Go', out in October 2014. The singer-songwriter approach became something else when Ffion starting performing with a full band, sharing bills with the likes of Honeyblood or Jessica Pratt. Now the three first tunes have had two wonderful follow-ups this year with the single ‘No Applause’ / ‘Lead Balloon’, out in May on Lost Map Records and, more recently with the shiny 'So Long', out now on Turnstile Records. Think on Angel Olsen and Nancy Sinatra, or a less-slacker version of our beloved Courtney Barnett in love with the Shangri-Las. Pop with retro and surf vibes delivered with a punchier, hazier edge without losing any of their arresting charms. More soon please!

Discoverer 125: new indie findings

In anticipation of Primavera Club, this weekend we are going to offer you a double dose of our discoveries series, with six bands & artists that are definitely our must-watchs of the Festival. Here are the first three, enjoy!

Chastity Belt. Formed in 2010 in Walla Walla but based in Seattle, WA, this all-female quartet met in college and kicked out the pop-post-punk engine following post-grad shows received with enthusiasm from the city’s DIY community and songs surfacing online around 2012. In summer 2013, after the digital single 'Seattle Party' they put out praised debut album 'No Regerts' that allowed them to tour around the country. No more a party-band, now they are back with 'Time to Go Home' sophomore release out on Hardly Art since March. Without losing their careless and funnily goofy attitude, there's much more here to be enjoyed: instrumental sections that create haze and gray-skies, vocals that infuses anxiety and a pensive, melancholic mood, Shapiro's lyrics dissecting the mundane while at the same time questions existence. I've been to a wonderful party... but then I woke up next morning. Strikingly powerful, powerfully beautiful.

Ultimate Painting. Hailing from Eastern London, the parallel project of James Hoare from Veronica Falls and Jack Cooper from Mazes blossomed fully in the summer of 2014 with their eponymous debut single. It was the crystallisation of a fast growing friendship and music connection that has its origin when Mazes were on tour supporting Veronica Falls and turned into exchanging demos and music sessions after the gigs together ended. Self-titled first LP arrived in October 2014 on Trouble In Mind Records to wide acclaim and tours around the world along Parquet Courts, Twerps and White Fence. But the two quickly got back into studio to record follow-up 'Green Lanes', out since this August. A truly guitar record with a foot on that 60's English melancholia and the other on sunny California, Ultimate Painting delivers sparse, gentle, dreamy, melodic and harmonic tunes that are almost a treaty of what's enduring, eternal pop.

Samantha Crain. Hailing from Shawnee, Oklahoma, Crain began her prolific music career in 2004, beginning touring when she was just 19, defending songs based on her short stories the summer before her senior year at Dale High School. That material became also her first recording, the self-released EP 'The Confiscation', later reissued by Ramseur Records in 2007. Their solo project expanded into a full band, the Midnight Shivers, with whom she recorded the album 'Songs in the Night' in April 2009 but, after the band disbanded, she came back to release under her own name with LP 'You (Understood)' a year later. Then arrived her work alongside John Vanderslice, who produced her 7" single 'A Simple Jungle' on 2012 as well as third album 'Kid Face' in 2013 on Full Time Hobby Records. Now the circle is completed with 'Under Branch & Thorn & Tree', out since July on Ramseur Records. A incredibly talented artist, with a gifted voice and an extraordinary ability for adding a striking, fierce and honest, narrative to an already attractive, melodic army of tunes. What a find!
