The Indie Anthology 81: essential songs

New year, new attempt to recover the pace of the Blog posts and revitalize some of its dearest sections, like the Indie Anthology. And to do so, here's one of my favourite post-punk tunes from a short-lived but pretty amazing band. Oh, their rapture, one of these nights!!

Year: 2004

Agreed, the post-punk revival was, mostly, a bunch of crap. But there were amazing exceptions to the rule, like Interpol's first albums, Editors' debut and the majestic 'Grab that gun', from Vancouver's quintet The Organ. Still sounding like an album resulting from the marriage of Morrissey (the meaningful one) and Joy Division and The Cure, with hints of Siouxsie, Patti Smith and Kristin Hersh on the arresting voice of Katie Sketch. Sadly, it was just a very short ride, with the band disbanding shortly after, but a striking one. I could choose among half of the record tunes, but I'm sticking with 'Brother', its bouncy immediacy coming out of nowhere, propelled to stratosphere thanks to the simple-yet-mind blowing melody-bearing bass before Jenny's Hammond organ embraces you while guitar lines and concise drumming bring you back to the late 80s now in sepia. I hear bands like beloved Desperate Journalist or even Savages here, and I wonder where The Organ could have achieved. Well, at least their testament was a hell of a record. It was exciting then. It is still exciting now...

Back to life with The National and Editors!

After a week abducted with work, I'm back on full mode. Two blistering videos/tunes to get back on track! First, The National's "Sea of Love" official video. What a mind-blowing song. Got tickets to see them in L.A.!!!!!

And more love with Editors' new single "A Ton of Love". Wasn't expecting much after the last record and their internal issues, so I'm extremely excited about this Echo & The Bunnymen-U2 sounding tune. Great to hear Tom embracing the world with his furious voice again!

The Love Anniversary Playlist

Today is a very special day, me and my girlfriend are celebrating our second anniversary together. So I hope you allow us this playlist, largely discussed and analysed, that is a compendium of the 24 songs/bands (one for each month being together) that have been/are important in our relationship. Needless to say, it is a extremely personal playlist, listed in some sort of chronological order regarding our relation, with a few of my favourites, few of hers, and many others that can't only be understood for us. Road trip: a list of records for driving

From tomorrow until Sunday I'll be on a road trip, a small break (somewhat forced) from work. But before leaving and following Kathryn Calder's idea/list you can read on the recommendable music website playgroundmag.net, here's my list of records that, in my opinion, must-be on any unforgettable indie music trip. That's what we'll be hearing in our car tomorrow. Which would be yours? Have fun!

Highway Revisited- Bod Dylan. Mandatory. A classic among classics. Hard for me to imagine a song that fits the road better that the iconic "Like a Rolling Stone". "Blonde on Blonde" won't we a bad choice either. Perfect start.

The Joshua Tree- U2. The second undisputed and personal classic that had to be included. Songs with a cinematic quality, that evoke landscapes, ideal for the open spaces and long roads.

Murmur- R.E.M. And the third masterpiece. A unique record, mysterious and joyful at the same time.

Suck It and See- Arctic Monkeys. Sunny day ahead on the road? Then it's a perfect choice. Don't forget your sunglasses!

Franz Ferdinand- Franz Ferdinand. We accelerate the rhythm as we drive. Uptempo, dynamic and catchiest indie-rock. Plus is one of the favourite bands of the driver, so I have to concede her that.

I Love Your Glasses/Fuerteventura- Russian Red. On the list 'cause we'll see her gig on Friday at Mercat Música Viva de Vic. Besides, her songs are perfect for a sunny and lazy early afternoon.

Helplessness Blues- Fleet Foxes/The King Is Dead- The Decemberists/ The Rip Tide- Beirut. This trio of records/artists come "in a pack" because this is the perfect music for a trip to the countryside. As a matter of fact, any record from them will do.

The Back Room- Editors/Turn On the Bright Lights- Interpol. Change of mood, more somber, upbeat and gloomy. Great choices for night driving.

Central Reservation- Beth Orton. My choice for late night/early morning driving. What else could be better than returning home lulled by Beth's voice?
