The Good

Four more bands: For free, under sunny and clear skies, in a relaxed way despite massification (which also means noise) at Parc de la Ciutadella. Seeing my dear Renaldo & Clara (want them in a more intimate venue soon please) playing some tunes of their superb new album, Hospitality for the second time, Mark Eitzel and Dum Dum Girls, who offered a very nice show again, in such a unique scenario is quite a thing to experience. A great way to end this Festival's edition after the exhausting (we were really on our physical limits on Sunday afternoon) central days at Fòrum, don't you think?

The Bad

Massification: Coincidence or bad planning? Pretty sure wasn't the fault of the organisation, but the fact there was something else going on at the Parc (involving hundreds, thousands, zillions of kids, you can all get terrified now) almost collapsed the place. By the time Dum Dum Girls closed the gigs, it was extremely hard to just walk by.
Angel Olsen: We were so exhausted we couldn't find the strength to watch her at BARTS on Sunday night. Deeply sorry for that, please come back soon to Barcelona!

The Queen

The Mark Eitzel Ordeal: Long-time pending on my agenda, I finally can say I saw Mr. Eitzel, which exceeded my expectations. Romantic, passionate and intense, bursting with every single word he delivered. I know this might be read as a cliche or a naive comment, but you know when an artist sounds true to your ears? Eitzel looked to me like a musician from another time, meaning that in a positive way. Without cynicism, without caring about aesthetics. Just melodies, words and heart. Only one thing to regret, the show was too short.

And following the previous three posts, the last "big day" at the Forum, Saturday 31st at Primavera Sound 2014. A day where expectations weren't that high but ended being the most complete...

The Good

The Buzzcocks: There were no bands that interested us much between 22:00 and 24:00, so we decided early on to try grabbing tickets for the Heineken Hidden Stage. And what a great idea it proved to be. Agreed, sound was quite awful, but what a fun and engaging show the punk-rock veterans put at PS. Quite something to see Pete Shelley and the relentless Steve Diggley giving all they had. 45 minutes of no quarter and undeniable hits, including 'What Do I Get', 'Harmony in My Head' & 'Ever Fallen In Love With Someone (You Shouldn’t’ve Fallen In Love With?)'. Fun, fun, fun.
Dum Dum Girls: Took them a little while to ignite, but they ended offering us a great gig. Still undecided on the looks (I think it distracts many people from the music, which to me is sad), but tunes like 'Rimbaud Eyes', 'I Got Nothing', and the heartfelt finale with 'Coming Down' are reasons enough to convince the blind, the deaf and the dumb...

Primavera style: If there's one thing that makes this Festival rank among the best music experiences one can have is the fact you can spend a day (and not the most demanding one) seeing at least half a dozen interesting bands. This 2014's edition seemed a bit disappointing in that sense... until Saturday arrived. Our schedule was: La Sera-Univers (half gig)-Courtney Barnett-Dum Dum Girls-Hospitality-Buzzcocks-Helen Love. Not bad at all.

The Bad

Pitchfork-Vice sound: Quite simple, both stages have to improve in terms of sound quality. Also, something has to be done in order simultaneous gigs doesn't come together, which can be extremely annoying. Hip-hop while Hospitality plays? No way.
Little improvable things: Highly secondary but after several editions I still find Flatstock quite disappointing & expensive if you are not interested in a particular range of musics (Queens of the Stone Age style). Also the system to gave the Hidden Stage tickets could have been better, so there's no need for pretty ridiculous queues.

The Queen

Courtney Barnett: I was sure her gig was going to be good, but that AMAZINGLY GOOD? Folk acquiring muscle, rock getting wit, impeccably executed tunes but flowing with dynamism and graceful spontaneity, like the natural, unforced charisma Barnett's has. Talent arousing, spilling over Pitchfork's stage. Do yourself a favour and go listen/watch the Aussie live if you can, you'll thank me!

Primavera Sound 2014: first impressions

And the DAY arrived, the Primavera Sound 2014 unveiled its line-up yesterday night. The movie was so-so imo (too short to make their story appealing) and the theatre was too full of hipster/posers only worried to identify the band names that made it hard to follow, but anyway, that's understandable. PS organisers offered quite a night (for free) to guests, so many thanks in that sense. 

But let’s go to key question. The #BestLineUpEver? No way. But it's a very interesting, diverse, and with a lot of potential line-up. Except Friday (The National & Slowdive, oh yes, oh yes), it’s the year I’m more disinterested with headliners. As a matter of fact, Thursday’s big names are ok for me, Friday are excellent, and Saturday are… annoying. It’s also worrying bands/hypes like Disclosure, Volcano Choir or Haim are so high in the line-up instead of groups like Midlake, Real Estate, Dum Dum Girls. So more than ever, I’ll happily focus on the "middle & lower class" of the line-up, where names like The Julie Ruin, Hospitality, Courtney Barnett or my dear Sharon Van Etten appear. Crossing my fingers overlaps have mercy this edition. They are going to make the difference between an ok Festival or an unforgettable one.

When timetables are confirmed, I'll add our plan for Wednesday and Sunday, but right now for SURE I'm going to La Castanya showcase (Me and the Bees!) and Primavera als Parcs, which looks stunning! But right now, here's how my (our) Primavera Sound 2014 looks like...

Green- Definetely seeing them. Absolute must
Yellow- If there are no overlaps (in particular with the green ones), I'll be there for sure
Orange- Curious about it/"on research mode"

Primavera Sound 2014: My Wish List

It's another tradition to honour. The Primavera Sound Festival will unveil its line-up on January 28th, it seems that with a movie (intriguing!). The few names announced so far, Arcade Fire, Pixies and Neutral Milk Hotel are not very exciting for me, and rumours like NIN, Beck, Neil Young or Kanye West are so worrying, not to mention terrible proposals like Daft Punk (just my opinion of course). So, as we did on previous years, here's how my wish list would like. It's a mix between personal desires and bands that, seeing their agendas, could very well be in Barcelona next May... Fingers crossed, because it could be an incredible edition! If you follow my advice... maybe the slogan #bestfestivalever might be true, hehehe....

1. Alpaca Sports. The pluperfect indiepop band, how long without them in Barcelona? Not fair.
2. Beth Orton. Needed. Too long since the last time I saw her.
3. Cat Power. Dropped last year, but she's still touring, so second chance in 2014? It would be fantastic.
4. Decemberists, The. Still one of my must-see bands. Still!!!!
5. DIIV. Same case as Chan Marshall. Eagerly expected.
6. Fear of Men. Debut LP ready for Spring. Mandatory band to watch & hear on 2014
7. Go Violets. My best EP of 2013. They deserve a spot in Barcelona...
8. Hospitality. New album arriving on early 2014, they do have to cross the Atlantic this time...
9. Julie Ruin, The. Kathleen Hanna is back, and happily, she's also touring. Even more than that, they play in France on May 27th, so their schedule fits wonderfully... Enough said.
10. National, The. I know it. You know it. Everybody knows it. Dates fit so well. Won't be as special as seeing them in L.A. but of course, we'll be there.
11. New Zealanders. Primavera Sound bring newcomers Trick Mammoth and Males to Barcelona. And Prophet Hens (all three bands courtesy of Fishrider Records). And Astro Children. I could go on....
12. Real Estate. We know there's an album on the making, so we want them back.
13. Rose Elinor Dougall. Arguably one of the most haunting voices ever imo, her latest EP, "Future Vanishes", is another solid step on her striking solo career so far. Sophomore album and tour are on the works so please make a stop in Barcelona...  
14. San Fermin. Can you imagine how amazing could be a San Fermin gig at Auditori? American tour ends in March, so why not an European leg in Spring?
15. Sleater-Kinney. Wild Flag is over, they gathered on stage at a Pearl Jam's gig recently and the buzz keeps going. If it's not just a rumour, this is a MUST for Primavera Sound. Enough said (part II)
16. Slowdive. Kind of a rumour again, although Rachel and Neil are reuniting for some gigs in London, so here's hoping...
17. Softies, The. Or any combo, new project in which Rose Melberg is involved. With The Softies I want to claim a much bigger space for indiepop at Primavera please!!
18. Torres. Another MUST (why only in Madrid this Autumn?). At Auditori it would be mind-blowing. 
19. Wild Swans, The. Reissues and more reissues, why not a tour throughout Europe? Or at least Barcelona in Spring? Paul Simpson say yes!
20. Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Didn't like "Mosquito", one of the biggest disappointments of the year imo, but I have to see Karen O at least once live...

Best Records of the Year 2012

As promised yesterday, after the EPs' list, here's the review of the year in what regards to the best records of 2012. In my humble opinion of course. Compared with 2011 I have reduced the number of albums because I wanted to be completely honest. Just records that I have listened and enjoyed fully.

The digital age is a blessing for music lovers, as the amount of music you can discover is virtually  unlimited. But it has a negative side: there's a compulsion, a dramatic acceleration on the way we listen to it. How many spins you give a record before moving to another artist? How many records you have stored in your computer of which you could only name 2-3 songs?

Don't know if the LP idea as we know is fated to disappear, but personally it makes me sad. Anyway, this sort of thoughts should go on a different post. But it serves my purpose to tell you why the records from Lightships, BMX Bandits, This Many Boyfriends, Corin Tucker or Motorama didn't make the list. They sound terrific on a first listen, or from what I have heard by now, and that's exactly why they deserve to be listened properly and not to be included on a list just for the sake of mentioning more albums. Having said that, here's the list!

Primavera Club 2012: my wish list

Swans, a quality and prestigious name but very far from my tastes was filtered a couple of days ago. Today, Gabi Ruiz tweeted the full line-up of the Primavera Club 2012 (December 5 to 9) will be announced  next Tuesday12th. So, as I did with Primavera Sound last spring, here's how my wish list would like... aside from my impossible and recurring dreams (I guess) of bringing The Very Most, The Hermit Crabs, Nat Johnson or Electrelane to Barcelona, I just made the list from bands that could be possible seeing their agendas so far... so here's hope!

Alpaca Sports. Well, they are simply one of the most delicious acts that have appeared this year.
Corin Tucker Band, The. The album is just arriving, so they should present it, so why not Barcelona? Or maybe for Primavera Sound 2013. Another amazing option (would love to have both) is to include Wild Flag, still have to come here!
Echo Lake. Touring UK in October....
Evans the Death. Similar case to Echo Lake.
ExLovers. No dates means options? Hope so.
Fonda. They release a new album very soon, so the time is right....
Fountains. The best new band of the year?
Hospitality. My Nº1 choice of the list. They end their American tour in November so...
Motorama. Finally, finally, finally, please...
School, The. Another must-see.
Shrag. "Canines" deserves a stop in Barcelona!
Softies, The. The Chickfactor celebrations gathered them for some gigs. Needless to say that would be a dream come true...
Stealing Sheep. Recently discovered, and completely haunted. How will they sound live?
Strawberry Wiplash. Wouldn't it be nice if Matinée Recordings had a special section at Primavera each year?
Toy. Similar case to Stealing Sheep. Counting the days for the record to arrive...
Wild Nothing. Their calendar dates seems to fit nicely...
Young Romance. Favourites from the blog, Claire and Paolo are an absolute must.

Best songs of the year 2012... so far

Like we did last year, it's June, time for taking a look to what has 2012 offered so far in terms of music. Here's a playlist with the best 30 songs (in my opinion, of course) of the year to date. Like its 2011 predecessor, several songs have been dropped because the selection followed two criteria: songs released during 2012, and just 1 song per group/artist, so I could include different proposals. "Hospitality", indie-pop debut of the year

Hospitality- Hospitality

Yeah, I know, a big statement on the title, but Hospitality's fun, hyper-addictive, catchy as hell and quite peculiar, quirky indie-pop, deserves that sort of title for a post. If there's a better debut album this year, then 2012 should be one to be musically remembered.

The start of "Hospitality", the album, is unbeatable, terrific. "Eight Avenue", "Friends of Friends" and "Betty Wang". Upbeat, intricate indie-pop that makes you smile and "charge batteries". Full of melodies that stuck in your head, this is the sort of music that fits perfectly to walk/wander around the city on a sunny day. It will be a matter of time you'll find yourself humming along one of its irresistible choruses ("But I've got friends that are new friends"), or some of the one-liners where Amber Papini's shines. "If you leave New York/ I don't care, I don't care!" 

Because Papini's voice is one of the "miracles" of Hospitality. Kind of funny and strange (on Merge Records website, their label, they explain she learnt to sing with the English accent of Bernard Butler while listening to Psychedelic Fur's "Talk Talk Talk"), but also sweet, she will amuse you first, and then, once you have been disarmed, it will haunt you. Her peculiar vocal range and tone quickly becomes a trademark of the band, allowing to distance them from indie-pop standards. And Papini is a fine lyricist too, explaining stories in the songs that are not that unfamiliar for a whole generation of of twentysomething's-thirties trying to figure out what's next in their life, always with a refreshing wit and humour, not taking things too seriously.

There's a particular groove going on during the whole album, giving it a cohesion. Despite finding more languid numbers in its "middle section" like "Julie" (maybe the less impressive of the lot), the delicate "Sleepover", or "Argonauts" and "Liberal Arts" with its wonderful harmonies, towards the end, there's also space for some more fast-paced tunes, where guitars keep shimmering, intertwined with trotting drums and keyboards on "The Right Profession", "The Birthday" or the closer "All Day Today". Songs are wisely combined throughout the record, helping to make it a joyous, very fluent one. Like the good albums, "Hospitality" gives the listener the impression it ends too soon. So there's no other option that going for another "spin". Da-da-da-da-da-da/da-da-da-da.....

Battling Sónar Festival 2012 with covers!

I'm trying to write a couple of posts but I'm blocked... mainly because outside our flat there's an (electronic) war: Sónar Festival 2012 has started... not even 100 mts from where we live. With our extra-thin walls and the hot weather that forces us to keep the windows open if we don't want to get sick, there's no other option: we have to fight (musically speaking of course).

So, thanks to the wonderful A.V. Undercover Episodes we are enjoying some exciting, powerful, and extra-loud covers, so we don't have to hear the (almost exaggerating) annoying and neverending electronic beats (not a fan of that sort of music, but what really pisses me quite a bit is how they define themselves as an "advanced music Festival", but oh, well that's another story...). So, let's play some guitars and some "real" singing instead!

Discoverer 31: new indie findings

New bands for you!

Hospitality. You know when a song gets stucked in your head? That's what's happening to me with the chrous of "Friends of Friends". Or the "dadada" part of "The Birthday". Or the melody of "Betty Wang". I could go on for each one of the ten songs that conform "Hospitality", their debut album, out since January. This Brooklyn trio, leaded for the addictive voice of Amber Papini, formed in 2007. After releasing its well received first self-titled EP in 2008, they remained quiet for a while, but not anymore. Signed to Merge Records, this band is fated for greatness. Indie-pop at its best!

Persian Rugs. More recent obsessions. There's a  song that gives me goosebumps: "Always All" from Toronto’s Persian Rugs. Formed in 2009, they started recording in 2010 (demos available at their bandcamp), officially debuting with "Always All EP" on Cloudberry (again) the next year. Novella. Ending this week recommendations, and thanks to the superb taste of the blog skatterbrain! I discovered this female trio from London, UK, set to release their self-titled first EP in mid-March, on Italian Beach Babes label, while they'll be touring UK alongside Veronica Falls (lukcy brits!). Recalling  another female band, Warpaint, Novella offer a powerful and hypnotic indie rock plenty of psychedelia and guitar riffs, naming Flying Nun or Brian Jonestown Massacre as influences.
