Discoverer 167: new indie findings

September's arrival comes with a new round of our discoverer series with a trio of infallible Antipodean proposals, with bands and artists that have come out with some of the most exciting releases of the year so far. Long life to guitar indie-pop from down under!

School Damage. We begin our trip between Melbourne and Geelong, with this foursome formed around 2013, although initially it was the bedroom pop project of Carolyn Hawkins (member of the great Chook Race and also in Parsnip) and Jake Robertson (Ausmuteants), releasing the tape 'Deep Net' that November via Moontown Records. Then the duo expanded to its current format with the addition of Jeff Raty on drums and Dani 'Damage' Hakim on bass. After two 7", 'Break Up' in August 2014 and 'Phone Drone / Something New' in October 2016, the band came out in 2017 with their self-titled debut album, out in June 2017 thanks to Chapter Music. This year they have released another 7", 'Sings' ... Four Songs About One Cat' out via Upset! The Rhythm in May and, since this August, their sophomore album 'A To X'. Like an impossible crossover of Look Blue Go Purple, Young Marble Giants and Television Personalities, their songs are quirky and über catchy  indiepop tunes revolving around shaky keyboards and knitting bass lines. Instant crush.    

The Beths. Quick shift to Auckland, New Zealand, to meet this irresistible (damnit I missed their recent gig in Barcelona) four-piece leaded by Elizabeth Stokes (guitarist, lead vocalist, and primary songwriter). A band of longtime friends, Stokes and guitarist Jonathan Pearce attended high school together, and at the University of Auckland meet up with old mates bassist Benjamin Sinclair and drummer Ivan Luketina-Johnston, where they studied jazz. Luckily for us, that genre has nothing to do with The Beths music, something we started to confirm in March 2016 with debut EP 'Warm Blood'. Now the band wants to hig big with first album 'Future Me Hates Me' out via Carpark Records since this August. And they should achieve that goal, because the record is a knockout collection of energetic and infectious guitar indie-rock tunes packed with bitting lyrics, joyful pop hooks and killer vocal harmonies. Heavy contender for debut album of the year.

Hatchie.  And we return to Australia to meet Harriette Pilbeam, a very young artist from Brisbane who is making a lot of "good noise" over the blogosphere thanks to her debuting EP 'Sugar & Spice', out since May. Formerly part of Blog favourites Go Violets, her current incarnation has been properly active since 2016, the 25 year-old musican's tunes are an inmediately catchy coalescence of dreampop landscapes and the poppier side of shoegaze, with a stunning knack for penning the definitive pop hook. Yeah, it might have a bit of that everywhere now 80s sound and the "sugar", or the Sky Ferreira-Carly Rae Jepsen (ugh) could easily "win" in forthcoming releases. But there's no point in creating future bad vibes as, for now, we can enjoy this addictive five tunes summoning the spirits of The Sundays of Cocteau Twins. Lot to love.

More fire at the Blog! We are eager for the weekend and more than happy to kick it off with a new round of our TOP TEN Jukebox. One in which we celebrate the return of much beloved Eleanor Friedberger, the stunning tune of Night Flowers (early contender for song of the year?) while we keep following our 'path' of presenting you some discoveries such as Renata Zeiguer or The Moondoggies. Another stressful week on Touristland... sorry I meant Barcelona, the land of radioactive sunshine, ugly and overcrowded beaches, artificial sand and cheap do-as-you-want tourism. Sure I'm painting broad strokes, and there's a vast majority of people visiting Barcelona for all the good reasons, behaving as they should, but 'our' city is becoming an ultra-expensive, annoying and dreary amusement park instead of a nice place for living... and it really hurts. Sorry for the rant, whatever the case, we have managed to skip the suitcases, skaters, bikes, segways and drunks to bring you another chapter of our TOP TEN Jukebox. Discoverer 155: new indie findings

Another long hiatus in our discoverer series (hard to find the time to write) that we are glad to break today, thanks to three exciting and sonically very diverse bands we haven't stopped listening this 2017 and we couldn't miss the chance to talk you about. So, back across the globe in search of great music!

The Stevens. A no-brainer, we had to begin the trip in our dear Antipodes, with this band hailing from Melbourne. Formed in 2011 as the project of guitarists Alex Macfarlane (from our beloved Twerps, as well as Tyrannamen) and New Zealander Travis MacDonald, initially joining forces with Macfarlane’s old school friends, Tam Matlakowski and Callum Foley, later on 2012 being replaced by Gus Lord (also in Twerps) on bass and Matthew Harkin on drums. The band debuted with a self-released and self-titled EP, re-issued in 2012 with the essential label Chapter Music. Two years later, in 2014, they came up with first LP 'A History Of Hygiene', that gave them the chance to tour supporting the likes of R Stevie Moore, Wire, Parquet Courts or Real Estate. Now the band is back with sophomore album 'Good', out just now. And what a return to form this is! A lot of love for the 'Flying Nun sound', shiny jangle pop, a well-rounded dose of "slacker" pop, tones of short lo-fi gems and a wonderful sense for the listener you could be listening to the record over and over and you'll find new things each time. 18 times THAT good.

Priests. Formed in 2012 in Washington D.C. this quartet of punk rock and post-punk preachers lead started to convert their fandom thanks to their live shows, lead by the fierce presence of frontwoman Katie Alice Greer as well as their collection of self-released tapes and 7-inches spreading throughout 2012 and 2013, and delivered by their label Sister Polygon Records. Then the combo started working with Don Giovanni Records, co-releasing the mini-album 'Bodies And Control And Money And Power' a year later. Now Priests are back with their debut album 'Nothing Feels Natural' out since past January. A thunderous, politically committed, smart, sonically ambitious and rich, swaggering record that channels Fugazi, Bikini Kill and Sleater-Kinney into Trump's era. At least something feels natural... and powerful.

Sonic Visions. And we end in Helsinki, Finland, to introduce you to this promising & young 5 piece group formed in 2015 and with their first release, the EP 'Lost in Between', out since late January via Soliti Records. An immediate burst of adrenaline , the six tunes are an intoxicating collection of shoegaze and space-rock tunes with rousing guitars and a refreshing pop twist, recalling Ride´s most exuberant moments, or my beloved Toy, unabashedly indulging themselves into the realms of pop. Or even a rockier, Jesusandmarychainesque (not bad for a word, right?) version of the Stone Roses. All in all, a very addictive way to get lost into music...

Time to go back to our weekly TOP TEN Jukebox, full of refreshing & summer mood songs. Because, on paper, July is supposed to be an "easy" month in terms of work but, this isn't reality AT ALL. That's why we have thought to bring you a "taste" of what the season should be by mixing the latest collaboration of a most beloved artist, Sharon Van Etten, with new interesting projects like Kidd or Houseplants. Discoverer 140: new indie findings

As we can't go physically (yet, we won't give up) what about taking advantage of the holidays to go tour most dreamt destination? Yes, here's another trip down under, with an incredible trio of Antipodean new bands in our discoverer series. Sure you're going to enjoy!

The Goon Sax. Riley Jones, Louis Forster (son of the great Robert Forster) and James Harrison are still teenagers and hail from Brisbane. The band formed at high school in 2013, when friends James and Louis began recording at James' home as a duo, until Riley joined in March 2014, after a month of drum lessons. First live show arrived at the Zoo in June 2014, and since then have played with Twerps, Blank Realm or Crayon Fields among others. In 2015, after getting impressed by an unsolicited demo, Chapter Music signed the trio. After first singles 'Sometimes Accidentally' and 'Boyfriend' appeared later in that same year creating such an exciting buzz on the group, their heavily anticipated debut album is now here. Under the title of  'Up to Anything' here's a surprising love letter to the magic of The Pastels, of course The Go-Betweens (talent stays in the family), Arthur Russell, Beat Happening and every pop band that should be on your music shelves. Frontrunners for the debut album of the year, fated for greatness.

Kane Strang. Let's go back to Dunedin's, NZ (always Dunedin) to meet young musician Kane Strang who kept self-releasing self-recorded acoustic tunes for a few years, until in 2013, while living in rural Germany he assembled (seems that it was recorded in a WWII bomb shelter) ‘A Pebble & A Paper Crane’, a self-released album or compilation of demos, depending the source of information. One of these songs, 'Winded' was included on the 2014' fantastic compilation LP 'Temporary', put out by our friends at Fishrider Records. After returning to New Zealand, he spent two months housesitting his parents Dunedin home while composed his proper debut album. 'Blue Cheese', out since February 2016 via Flying Nun and Ba Da Bing Records. Intriguing but undeniably melodic and immediate, Strang connects psych-pop with peculiar folkie and garage vibes, like channeling The Chills and The Clean kindred spirits with the most quiet moments of the Pixies. Very special and addictive.

Loose Tooth. And we end in Melbourne with another trio forged on the life-long friendship of Etta Curry (drums/vocals) and Nellie Jackson (guitar/vocals), completed around 2012 with the addition of Luc Dawson on bass, transforming their pop sketches into real hyper-catchy fuzzy tunes. Signed with the great Milk! Records, they are ready to make an impact with debut EP 'Saturn Returns' this April. Mark the date in your calendar, because this band has everything to knock you out. Stomping garage-rock tunes with traces of punk-rock, think on Thee Oh Sees and The Shop Assistants, guitars crunching, erupting vocals, that unstoppable beat... hearts conquered.

Discoverer 101: new indie findings

Our 101 post in our discoverer series is a special one: another trip "down under", but this time to Melbourne, Australia, where three exciting bands are ready to blow you away!

The Zebras. Pop veterans that started their career in Brisbane in 2001 when Jeremy Cole, Edwina Ewins, Matt Jones and Leon Dufficy made the move from Cairns and shoegaze, quickly supporting bands like Lambchop and The Shins, a most promising fact fuelled by the airwaves love of first single 'Car of Idiots'. In 2004 arrived their eponymous debut album on Lost and Lonesome, with sophomore LP 'Worry a Lot' coming in 2007, to much of acclaim from fans and critics. But then came frustration with Brisbane's pop scene, which provoked the group's disband. Although there was an EP in 2008, 'New Ways of Risking Our Lives' with Cole and Ewins introduced assembling a new line-up, The Zebras got in some sort of hibernation... until now, with the arrival of flamboyant new album 'Siesta', out since June on Jigsaw Records and Lost and Lonesome. POP in big capital letters, sumptuous, jangling, endearing, sun-soaked, with Edwina Ewins melting hearts vocals. Serious contender for the best-of-the-year albums lists...

Twerps. Formed in late 2008, this quartet were already supporting big names like Deerhunter, The Bats, Black Lips, Yo La Tengo and Thee Oh Sees within a few months of their first show. Their debut EP, 'Good Advice', arrived on Chapter Music a year later in late 2009 (also released on cassette at US by Night People label). Hype became a fact when Uncut magazine called them “best new band in Australia”, fostered in 2011 when they released single 'She Didn't Know' and 'Black Eyes', followed by self-titled debut album co-released by Chapter Music and Underwater Peoples. A new single, 'Work It Out/He's In Stock', and a tour with Real Estate came in 2012. Now, after a line-up change on drums, Twerps return to action with eight song EP 'Underlay', out this August on Chapter Music and Merge Records. Immediate pop, playful and unaffected. Lazy voices, crystalline guitars, killer melodies, lo-fi scent... Honouring their own tradition (hard not to hear echoes from The Bats or The Clean) while giving us an irresistible dose of immaculate guitar-pop.

Lowtide. Although technically, they began in 2008 as Three Month Sunset, built around the solo workings of Gabriel Lewis, the band's rebirth as Lowtide in 2010 was more than just a name change, becoming a full and expansive sounding quartet. That same year the group released debut EP 'You Are My Good Light'. Shows with A Place To Bury Strangers and Festivals with names like Caribou, My Disco and Toro Y Moi followed. 2011 seem the band releasing a two-track single entitled 'Underneath Tonight' on Departed Sounds, with more shows alongside bands such as Royal Baths, The Laurels or Beaches. On 2012 and 2013 Lowtide focused on playing and preparing their self-titled first album, which was anticipated this May by the mind-blowing single 'Blue Movie', and its out since middle July on Lost and Lonesome. Somewhere in between the lovely Ride and celestial Slowdive (yes, talking big here), Lowtide have created and extraordinary record, full of reverb and dreamy layered guitars, air-suspended vocals and lush textures. A dreampop classic in 2014.
