The Bloodbuzzed Jukebox Week 91

Just a bit delayed (pretty serious technical issues, let's hope finally resolved), but here's our TOP TEN Jukebox with the songs we have liked the most lately. A nice antidote for unstable, rainy weekend ahead, (but most welcomed and much needed), the playlist gathers many exciting new bands and a couple of happy returns in the form of Strawberry Whiplash and Major Leagues. Discoverer 67: new indie findings

New dose of band proposals this Sunday for your ears only, enjoy!

Bubblegum Lemonade. You know I love Strawberry Whiplash, the Glaswegian duo formed by Sandra and Lawrence "Laz" McCluskey. Today I want to introduce you the other Laz's band, something I've been postponing waiting for a new release. The wait is finally over. Almost a one-man-affair until now, Laz's has already given us three EPs and two albums, all in our beloved Matinée Recordings, between 2007 and 2010. And now he is back with more. "Have You Seen Faith?", out now is a flamboyant 7" of perfect jangle pop pills, full of killing guitars lines and choruses, that previews a forthcoming third album, "Some Like It Pop", set for release this autumn. Welcome back Laz!

Selebrities. Forget their unfortunate name. This three-piece (four live) based in Brooklyn debuted, after signing with Cascine Records, in 2010 with "Ladies Man Effect" EP, blossoming with single "We've Been Foolish" and first album "Delusions" in 2011. A growing buzz, touring with Craft Spells or Puro Instinct, and single "Night Heat" anticipated their sophomore LP, "Lovely Things", out this June. Cradled with Maria Usbeck's ethereal vocals, their atmospheric mixture of post-punk & synth pop, sounds like New Order injecting blood to The XX's ecstatic pace, or Kraftwerk swallowed by Mozzer's desperate romanticism. Hypnotic.
Night Flowers. Our last stop is in East London with a 2013 project product of Chris Hardy and Greg Ullyart, quickly expanded with Film Director Ryan Haysom, singers Hester Ullyart and Emma Stewart and drummer Zeb Budworth. That's all in terms of info available, but enough to embrace their first two songs (freely yours if you want it at their bandcamp) "Night Beds/North" unabashedly. A fragile 90's affair, The Pains of Being Pure at Heart immediately comes to mind on the first tune, while the female vocals on the second recalls on the dreamiest side of C-86 before guitars arrive. Here's a promising start.

Discoverer 32: new indie findings

Strawberry Wiplash. Honestly, I discovered this Glaswegian duo in 2008, after releasing their debut EP "Who's in Your Dreams" in the essential label Matinee Recordings. But I admit I had lost track of them since then. Luckily this digital era always give you second chances, so after hearing "Stop, Look and Listen" the hyper-addictive, fuzzed twee-pop pill I'm back following songwriter and guitarist Lawrence McClusky and the charming vocals of Sandra. The single announces the arrival of "Hits in the Car" their first album, out on 27 March 2012. Won't be missed this time!

Fountains. The most exciting band to reach my inbox lately is this five-piece based in London. Only three songs available (run to their bandcamp, download freely and get the ultra-limited tapes!), but what an impressive debut is this "No Sleep" EP, out since February (review coming soon). The Wild Swans meeting Joy Division? The combination sounds too great to believe it, but this tunes are THAT BIG. They define themselves as shoegazers, but I dare to say this is "just" astonishing indie music. They've told me they are looking for the right label now. If there's hope in this planet they should have their phone collapsed by calls.    

Maple Leaves. Still in Glasgow (with a bit Northern England) for our third proposal. Maple Leaves formed at an open mic night in 2008 by Anna Miles and Julian Corrie, quickly evolving into a trio. They made quite a buzz, receiving the praise of Stuart Murdoch from Belle and Sebastian, who selected Miles as a singer on his "God Help the Girl" project. They debuted in 2010 with the EP "Golden Ether", and now as four-piece, they will release "Robots" EP this spring. Skilled but dreamy and compelling indie-pop, infused by a folkie and lush instrumentation (that flute). Lovable band.
